TWO Shenzhen patients who had been infected by the new pneumonia were discharged from  Shenzhen No. 3 People’s Hospital on Thursday afternoon after being cured, according to the city’s health commission.

The two patients are a 35-year-old man and a 10-year-old boy.

The man had lived in Wuhan for a long time. He developed symptoms such as low fever, cough, muscle aches and fatigue Jan. 9. The man flew from Wuhan to Shenzhen on Jan. 15 and was admitted to the hospital the next day.

The 10-year-old boy went to Wuhan to visit relatives Dec. 29. He began showing symptoms such as fever, muscle aches and a sore throat in Wuhan on Jan. 1. The boy returned to Shenzhen on Jan. 4 and was hospitalized Jan. 11.

Due to the intensive treatment of doctors at the hospital, the body temperatures of the two patients eventually returned to normal and their pulmonary lesions had improved significantly compared to when they were admitted to the hospital.

The Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention carried out two tests on the two patients to confirm their recovery. Both patients tested negative for the novel coronavirus Monday and also after a second test Wednesday.

According to the hospital, the test results mean that the virus no longer exists in the patients’ bodies and that they are not contagious.

The patients are required to return to the hospital for a check on a regular basis.

According to Liu Lei, head of the hospital, patients who show signs of a quick recovery are mostly young people, while those who recover slowly are mainly the elderly and patients with histories that include smoking, emphysema and heart disease.

By the end of Wednesday, a total of 32 cases of pneumonia caused by the virus had been confirmed in Guangdong Province.

Fifteen cases had been confirmed in Shenzhen, and the patients were being treated in isolation at Shenzhen No. 3 People’s Hospital.

No deaths had been reported and no medical staff had been infected by the novel coronavirus in the province as of Thursday.

The 15 patients all lived in or had traveled to Wuhan, or had close contact with infected patients, according to the commission.
