JAY RODRIGUEZ stunned Old Trafford into silence with his goal in the 56th minute as the Clarets captured their first win at the ground since 1962 by beating United 2-0. It’s also Burnley’s first win against United in over a decade, and make no mistake, it was every bit deserved. The Clarets were well-drilled and happy to let their opponents rack up unthreatening chances. The home fans booed their team off the pitch and chanted negative sentiments toward United’s American ownership, the Glazer family. Holding a 1-0 lead after halftime, Rodriguez strode confidently into the penalty area and ripped a left-footed shot on the unsuspecting David de Gea’s net. That goal caught de Gea off guard the same way Burnley did United. The Clarets were winless in 15 top-flight away trips in the series since a 5-2 triumph Sept. 22, 1962. Chris Wood fired the visitors in front shortly before halftime by opportunistically lashing home a loose ball. As for the Red Devils, well, they fall further into turmoil under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. A loss at Liverpool over the weekend demonstrated the chasm between themselves and their most bitter rival, and while United is still fifth in the table, these types of dispiriting performances keep sapping any confidence in the club turning things around this season. United was labelled an “embarrassment” as pressure mounted on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following Burnley’s shock 2-0 victory, while Tottenham boosted their top four prospects with a 2-1 win over Norwich on Wednesday. Solskjaer’s side suffered a third defeat in their last four Premier League games to put the United boss’ job security back under the microscope. The majority of Old Trafford was on its feet when chants of “stand up if you hate Glazers” echoed around the ground in reference to United’s owners. Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was also subjected to many other abusive chants, while those few fans who remained in the stadium booed Solskjaer and his players at full-time. Former United defender Rio Ferdinand, a Premier League and Champions League winner with the club, slammed the performance and called for the U.S.-based Glazer family to take action to stop the rot. “I can’t defend this,” Ferdinand told BT Sport. “These young kids now in schools around the country, they are not going to be wearing Manchester United shirts. “Fans are walking out after 84 minutes! It’s an embarrassment.”(SD-Agencies) |
