Drones used to disinfect areas

FOUR DJI drones for agricultural use, controlled by four professional workers in two groups, were used to spray over 10 liters of liquid disinfectant at four kitchen-waste disposal factories and a Yantian incineration plant Friday.

The work, which covered an area totaling 118,000 square meters, aimed to reduce the human workload and increase efficiency amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The authority said they will keep employing drones to disinfect public areas, with waste disposal centers and gardens on their target next.

It was said that DJI employees formed a volunteer team to fight the novel coronavirus epidemic Feb. 6.

On Saturday, a group of the volunteers used DJI drones to disinfect the Baolong industrial park in Longgang District. The disinfectant was designed to be safe for use in public areas, including streets and football pitches inside the park, covering nearly 60,000 square meters.

The whole process lasted three hours and was carried out by four working teams.

Compared with manual methods, using drones for outdoor disinfection not only eliminates the need to employ human resources but also has better performance outcomes and higher efficiency as the machines can reach a wider area with their 3-D operations.

The piloted operations also reduce the chances of operators making contact with disinfectant, according to DJI staff.

The voluntary work will continue until today at factories, residential communities, hospitals and quarantine sites with expected coverage of over 3 million square meters.

DJI will provide subsidies and protective equipment for its drone fliers who help to disinfect villages across the country.
