Newly recovered outnumbers new infections
    2020-02-24  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

CHINA’S daily number of newly cured and discharged novel coronavirus patients has surpassed that of new confirmed infections for the fifth consecutive day, according to the National Health Commission (NHC) yesterday.

Saturday saw 2,230 people walk out of hospital after recovery, much higher than the number of the same day’s new confirmed infections, which was 648, figures from the commission showed.

A total of 22,888 patients infected with the novel coronavirus had been discharged from hospitals after recovery by the end of Saturday, according to the commission.

Saturday marked the fourth consecutive day that China’s daily number of new infections remained under 1,000.

The newly recovered coronavirus patients in both Hubei Province and its capital city of Wuhan outnumbered new infections Saturday.

The commission yesterday said it received reports of 97 deaths Saturday from 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps.

Among the deaths, 96 were in Hubei Province and one in Guangdong Province, according to the NHC.

Another 882 new suspected cases were reported Saturday, said the commission.

The overall confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland had reached 76,936 by the end of Saturday, and 2,442 people had died of the disease.

The NHC added that 4,148 people were still suspected of being infected with the virus.

The commission said 628,517 close contacts had been traced, adding that among them, 22,128 were discharged from medical observation Saturday, with 106,089 others still under medical observation.

By the end of Saturday, 69 confirmed cases including two deaths had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 10 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 26 in Taiwan including one death.

Eleven patients in Hong Kong, six in Macao and two in Taiwan have been discharged from hospital after recovery.
