City bags 41 sci-tech innovation awards in GZ
    2020-03-27  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN took home 41 awards for science and technology projects it developed in 2019 at the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Innovation Conference held Wednesday in Guangzhou, a record high in the past 10 years for the city, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported yesterday.

Shenzhen-awarded projects took up 22.9 percent of the provincial total of 179 science and technology projects that were commended at the conference.

According to the Daily, Shenzhen-based DJI Technology Co. Ltd. won the only grand prize in the science and technology progress award category for the R&D and application of a 3-D environmental intelligent sensory system project. It was the seventh time that a Shenzhen company won the award. Previously, Huawei’s high-end data storage technology and its application won the grand prize.

A person in charge at DJI said in an interview with the Daily that the company regards the honor as a recognition of its innovation capabilities as well as an incentive for more high-tech companies to innovate.

Drones equipped with the smart system can track, position and avoid obstacles by analyzing the 3-D images formed using information collected by a sensor during autonomous navigation. The application of the system will lower the difficulty of operating a drone for a safe flight, said the person.

According to the person, most DJI drones equipped with the system have been sold in overseas markets including North America, South America, Europe and Japan. They have been used in a variety of industries, ranging from firefighting to surveying, from public security to environmental protection.

Drones with the smart system can also be used in patrolling and channeling crowds and disinfecting public places during anti-epidemic periods, said the person, adding that the DJI drones have earned recognition for aiding the COVID-19 prevention and control efforts in California, Paris, Rome and Madrid as the virus breaks out around the world.

Other award winners included six projects by Shenzhen University and one by the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

One of Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School’s two award-winning projects in the natural science award category won the first prize for its contribution to the development of a safe zinc-ion battery.

Shenzhen had three natural science awards, five technology invention awards and 33 science and technology progress honors. First-prize-winning projects from the city accounted for 16 percent of the provincial total, the Daily said.
