A PUBLIC health and emergency management institute will be established at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), according to a memo signed Thursday by the university with Shenzhen’s health commission, the center for disease control and prevention and Shenzhen No. 3 People’s Hospital for infectious diseases.

Establishing the institute is expected to further enhance Shenzhen’s ability to handle public health emergencies and provide needed talents to the city, as well as to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Gu Dongfeng, a member of the expert team of the National Health Commission and Chinese Academy of Sciences, and chair professor with SUSTech, said the institute will cultivate various talents in disease prevention and control by bringing together the advantages of related parties in research, medical treatment and disease prevention.

SUSTech was launched in 2011 in Nanshan District with the mission to reform Chinese tertiary education and become a top-notch international research university.
