People have to be responsible for themselves
    2020-05-01  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Jack Cai, G10, RDF International School

Sometimes people care little about potential danger that may have already surrounded them. This happened to me when I was very young.

I was so excited about a trip, to enjoy the hot springs, because I would finally get a break from school.

It took me a while to fall asleep that night, and I woke up very early the next morning. I had already packed my suitcase, but I had to wait for the rest of my family.

I was bored of waiting, so I started one of my favorite activities (spinning). Instead of spinning in my bedroom or the living room like I normally do- I was in the corridor. I started spinning, but there were no adults to stop me, or tell me I shouldn’t spin for so long, so I continued to spin.

At first my steps were steady, and in my eyes it didn’t seem to matter.

But after a few minutes I began to have some a funny feeling, I was supposed to stop but there was nothing in my mind. There was a box in the hall which should have been closed off but it was notand its door had a sharp corner.

My head collided with the corner of the box and as I immediately began to bleed, I also began to cry outloud.

When my parents heard me crying, they rushed to me and were surprised at the injury.

They reacted very quickly and used a towel to apply pressure to my wound. I remember this well, as it made a strong impression in my mind as after a few minutes, the brand-new clean towel had become dark and wet. Not with water but with blood.

They drove me to the nearest hospital where the doctors gave me stitches. All the while I was in an sombre mood during the minor operation.

I have learned a bloody good lesson from this. Since that day I have been very careful about my safety and I often wouldn’t imagine accidents could happen to myself.

After that incident, my dad would always warn our family of bad things that could happen to us. Lessons of safety are everywhere, such as how to save yourself from fire, how to protect yourself from criminals, and so on.

Unfortunately, many people are still either not careful enough or they pay no attention to what could happen.

Whenever I see someone get into an accident, or tough situation, I feel very sad.

I learned a lot from my own incident, and in some ways am a little “thankful” to this accident,

because I became hyper aware of the chances of getting hurt.

Thus, from my point of view, people should be responsible for themselves and do everything they can to ensure their own safety.
