Should students study on holiday?
    2020-05-20  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

David, G9, RDF International School

It’s known to all that almost everyone has vacations. Some people are free on weekends, while others enjoy their vacations during festivals. As for the Chinese students who only spend about 200 days at school each academic year, they have long vacations called summer holidays and winter holidays. However, international school students like me are required to go to school only for 180 to 190 days each year. We all have plenty of vacations but only a few of us study on holidays. From my point of view, students should keep on learning every day, even on weekends and holidays, for the following reasons.

Firstly, resting on holiday may result in bad grades. For students, if they indulge themselves in entertainment, they will be too relaxed and will forget much of the knowledge they acquired before vacations. For example, one of my neighbors, while being an excellent student at school, did nothing related to study during his grade 9 summer vacation other than playing hard and sleeping a lot. As a result, he forgot a lot of what he had learned before and failed to catch up with his classmates in the first semester of grade 10. He subsequently had to retake the grade 9 courses.

Secondly, to continue studying on holidays is good for the students’ health. Most students who do not study at all on vacations, will have nothing to do and may spend the whole day lying on their bed or sofa. Without doing sports, they will become fatter and unhealthy. Last winter holiday, my cousin had his leg hurt and all he could do was to lie down or sit. Believe it or not, he gained 10 kilos during his “relaxing” holiday.

What’s more, seldom studying on holidays may lead to a bad mood for students. Keeping away from meaningful tasks, the students may be bored and sit around with nothing to do.

They might be absent-minded and even feel depressed. But if the students find something to study, they will feel good during their vacations. With little homework and feeling bored on vacations in grade 6, I set a goal to remember 50 words every day so that I could not only learn some new words but also set a goal for myself. Hence, I made my life busier and enjoyed a happier holiday experience than ever before.

In conclusion, we need to study on vacations, especially for the students. Studying on holidays not only benefits the students with brand new knowledge but also helps them gain a happier life physically and mentally.
