Section of GD’s largest water project finished
    2020-06-02  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE experimental section of the Pearl River Delta Water Resources Allocation Project, a large-scale project to divert the Xijiang River to Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Dongguan along the water conveyance pipeline, was completed Friday after 30 months of work.

The experimental section, to test the viability of the project, runs 1.66 kilometers from Gongming Reservoir in Guangming District. It is part of the 11.9-kilometer Shenzhen sub-trunk line of the project that will be connected to the 90.3-kilometer trunk line. The 376 million yuan (US$52.8 million) experimental section includes tunnels, water locks and water discharging and receiving stations.

The success of the experimental section indicates that the contractors had explored a more economical and reliable engineering mode in the construction of a major water conservation project.

The Pearl River Delta Water Resources Allocation Project, said to be the largest water conservation project in Guangdong’s history, will bring 847 million cubic meters of water to Shenzhen a year.

It is one of the country’s 172 major water conservation and supply projects. The 35.4-billion-yuan project was inaugurated in May 2019.

It will pump water from the Xijiang River to the Dongjiang River and ease the water shortages in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Dongguan, and ensure an emergency supply for Hong Kong.

A super project following the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the water resources allocation project is the first big infrastructure project in Guangdong after the development plan for Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area was released. According to the plan approved by the Central Government, it includes a 90.3-kilometer trunk line, two sub-trunk lines, one branch line, three pump stations, and a new regulating reservoir, along the 113-kilometer underground pipeline route.

The project presents a great engineering challenge as pipes will be laid 40 to 60 meters deep underground throughout the whole project, especially going through the 10-kilometer Shiziyang tunnel under the mouth of the Pearl River. Upon its completion in about 60 months, the project will solve the water shortage problem of the three cities and provide a backup water source for Hong Kong.

The project will go through the city cluster in the Pearl River Delta starting from Liyuzhou, the main stream of the Xijiang River, and end at the Gongming Reservoir in Shenzhen.

The Dongjiang River is one of three major rivers of the Pearl River estuary and a major source of water for 40 million people in eastern Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Heyuan, Huizhou, Dongguan and Hong Kong. It provides 18 percent of the water resources in Guangdong, supports 28 percent of the population and 48 percent of the GDP.
