
Shenzhen Mingde Experimental School has collected teachers’ and students’ writings on online classes into two books to record the special experience amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “Listen to Frog Sounds,” a collection of students’ works, features three chapters including “Learning at Home,” “My Stories on Fighting the Epidemic” and “Children’s Poetry.” The title of the book, a quote from a poem by Xin Qiji, a poet of the Song Dynasty (960-1279), comes from an article by Liu Youxiang, a student who refers to alarm sounds as frog sounds. According to the article, amid the epidemic outbreak, it’s the alarm clock that forces Liu to rise early and finish morning reading tasks. The collection of teachers’ writings, titled “Teaching on the Cloud,” is a record of the teachers’ reflections on online teaching. “Online classes will be a complement to classroom learning rather than a replacement of it. They have brought challenges as well as opportunities to teachers because they require teachers to be better users of information technologies,” said Li Dan, a junior high school teacher of physics. Wang Gan, deputy headmaster of the school, said that he hopes the book of students’ writings could become an encouragement for the students when they see their names and writings printed in paper. According to Wang, education in the future will be different in a time of information technologies, and online learning may be part of the future. The collection of the teachers’ works serves as a summary of the online classes during the epidemic outbreak and will encourage more teachers to embrace new ideas and new skills and prepare themselves for future challenges.
