COVID-19 cure rate

China on Sunday issued a white paper on the country’s battle against COVID-19. The white paper, titled “Fighting COVID-19: China in Action,” was issued by the State Council Information Office.

As of the end of May, a total of 83,017 confirmed cases had been reported on the Chinese mainland, 78,307 infected had been cured and discharged from hospital, and 4,634 people had died. This demonstrates a cure rate of 94.3 percent, according to the white paper.

Life expectancy

The average life expectancy of Chinese citizens rose from 77 years in 2018 to 77.3 years in 2019, according to statistics released by the Chinese National Health Commission on Saturday.

China saw a falling maternal mortality rate which dropped from 18.3 per 100,000 in 2018 to 17.8 per 100,000 in 2019, said the commission in an annual communique on China’s health development. The infant mortality rate decreased from 6.1 per 1,000 in 2018 to 5.6 per 1,000 in 2019, the commission noted. According to the communique, more medical care services are available across the country.

Online courses

About 58.3 percent of Chinese parents of middle and primary school students are positive about the effects of online courses offered by their schools this semester due to the COVID-19 epidemic, a survey has found.

However, 73.9 percent of the parents said online courses have added an extra burden on them because they have to spend more time supervising and assisting their children, according to the survey by the China Youth Daily. Parents said they need to keep a close watch on their children to ensure they stay focused during classes. Parents also had to help them with homework and sometimes provide after-class tutoring.

CBA to restart season

The Chinese Basketball Association, or better known as its shorthand name the CBA, has announced to restart its season from June 20, amid further containment of the COVID-19 epidemic in China.

The Chinese sports league made the announcement on Thursday afternoon via the CBA official Sina Weibo account. According to the post, the remaining games of the season will be staged in Qingdao, Shandong Province and Dongguan, Guangdong Province. Such a decision has been approved by the country’s health and sports regulators. (SD-Agencies)
