My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising
    2020-06-10  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Kohei Horikoshi’s breakout hit “My Hero Academia” has been on the tip of every manga fan’s tongue since it launched in 2014. Gaining huge popularity, the superhero sensation has spun off into games, novels and the anime which is currently airing its fourth season. Following the success of the first film “My Hero Academia: Two Heroes,” this new film looks to increase the already huge fan base.

“My Hero Academia” is set in a world where almost everyone is born with a “quirk,” a special ability that can appear in literally any shape or form. One character can turn his body into meat and control it completely as if he was using telekinesis. Another gets stronger by eating sugar. Creator Kohei Horikoshi has taken advantage of this to create a spectrum of ingenious characters.

The story centers around protagonist Izuku Midoriya, a student who dreams of becoming a hero but who ultimately lacks a quirk. All hope seems lost until he meets and eats the hair of his idol and the world’s No. 1 hero All Might, propelling him into a brutal but courageous quest to become the greatest hero.

This film focuses on the 20 heroes in training. Set in the wake of All Might’s retirement, the students find themselves undertaking a special project on the small island of Nabu. It may seem like a gamble to give so many characters the spotlight in a short time frame, but director Kenji Nagasaki has done a great job of nurturing each individual character’s development, giving fans many options to cheer for.

But the peaceful time doesn’t last long as a quartet of powerful super villains invade the island, cutting it off from the outside world in the process. The isolated students find themselves in a real battlefield. The young heroes will have to use all the skills they have learned and go beyond their limits in this fight, especially when confronted by the villainous leader Nine, who has a powerful quirk.

Fans of the anime will notice a vast difference in the depth of animation from the TV anime. Mixing explosive action with emotive character designs, the production team gave each character a cinematic facelift as they shine in their finest moment.

In typical anime fashion the film has magnificent fight scenes that also measure each character’s resolve showing how far they have come. It showcases some of the series most brutal but brilliantly devised action scenes lifted by its heartfelt story of heroism.(SD-Agencies)
