Baicaoyuan Primary School in Luohu District was awarded the title of “Shenzhen Green School” at a launch ceremony of activities marking the World Environment Day on June 5, becoming the city’s only school to win the honor. Named after the Baicaoyuan in Lu Xun’s essay “From Baicaoyuan to Sanwei Private School,” Baicaoyuan Primary School has opened up a botanical garden in the air and the green coverage in the school has reached up to 60 percent. With a clean environment and well-equipped teaching facilities, Baicaoyuan Primary School is a green and vibrant school with a special focus for students on green education and habitat development. To make environment education more systematic, the school created a leadership group to promote environment education and oversee the school’s efforts to build itself into a green school. The leadership group is responsible for formulating plans related to environment education, making work summaries and granting rewards, and implementing these plans in the school’s work and teaching programs. The school attaches great importance to promoting the concept and knowledge about environmental protection in order to raise students’ awareness of caring for the environment. To that end, bulletins and slogans are set up on the campus and major themed activities are held on days designated for raising environmental awareness, such as Tree Planting Day and World Environmental Day. Meanwhile, the school has built several botanical gardens on the roofs of its buildings due to limited space, and as a result, a garden-style campus has taken shape. The school requires teachers to fully tap the teaching materials in textbooks that are related to environment education to pass on that knowledge to students. The school has also been organizing educational and practical activities through which students can learn knowledge related to environmental protection and further raise their awareness of environmental issues.
