SHEKOU, with a sizable community of foreign residents and many non-Chinese restaurants, is home to the majority of expats in Shenzhen and is a tourist attraction for visitors. Formerly a fishing village of Bao’an County (modern Shenzhen), Shekou became officially known as the Shekou Industrial Zone in 1979, one year earlier than the founding of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. By using modern company management systems, social insurance systems and project bidding systems in this zone, Shekou was at the forefront of the reform that opened a new path for China. The reform that started from Shekou soon spread to the rest of the country. In the past 40 years, Shekou has undergone several redevelopment projects including the construction of dozens of office and residential buildings, a number of shopping malls and cultural facilities.(SD News) |
