Dai Jiangang, a leading scholar in international operations research and fellow of International Federation of Operational Research Societies and Institute of Mathematical Statistics, was appointed as the director of the school.
“The school focuses on data science research and the cultivation of the field’s talents. Lessons including operations research, statistics, operations management and computer science, which are all closely related to applications and development of big data, artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic learning, will be included in education programs,” said Xu Yangsheng, president of CUHK-SZ.
The school has attracted a number of talented teachers and professors from related fields, such as Zhang Shuzhong, former director of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering of University of Minnesota, and Zha Hongyuan from the Georgia Institute of Technology, to form a teaching team.
The school has also built a comprehensive cultivation system from bachelor’s degrees to doctoral degrees, which includes four bachelor majors, namely data science & big data technology, computer science & technology, statistics and financial engineering, and two doctorate programs: data science and financial engineering.
In addition to the four bachelor subjects, an interdisciplinary major, data science & big data technology, was added this year as it has wide applications in areas such as finance, Internet, medical, logistics and education.
At present, the school’s applied research areas include bioinformatics, communication systems, finance, AI medical diagnosis, precise medicine, cloud computing, robotics, logistics, and supply chain technology. |
