Chinese Canadian multi-instrumentalist Henry Lau will give a live-streaming concert at 8 p.m. Sunday on the Tencent Music, Kugou Music, Kuwo Music and WeSing apps. Lau possesses a diverse repertoire of musical talents. He plays the piano, violin and guitar and is well-versed in different dance forms. He said he had planned to become a professional violinist, but never expected to become an idol star before being selected by S.M. Entertainment in 2006. For his audition, Lau performed a Vivaldi’s piece on his violin while incorporating popping (a style of street dancing) during the piece’s fast passages, as well as a cappella singing, and he then was accepted by the South Korean company in the following week. At the time, he had applied to colleges to study classical music, but ultimately decided to go on the K-pop road. “I’ll be dancing and singing, but that doesn’t mean I won’t be able to play the violin or piano anymore. I decided that I had to go down this road because that was the only way I could do pretty much everything,” he said. In 2013, Lau released his first extended performance, “Trap,” and it peaked at No. 2 on South Korea’s Gaon Album Chart and spawned the single with the same name, which peaked at No. 18 on the Billboard Korea K-Pop Hot 100 Weekly singles. In 2017, Lau released the self-composed single “Girlfriend,” which peaked at No. 1 on multiple South Korean daily digital charts. The original soundtrack “It’s You” that was released the same year became the top-streamed Korean OST on Spotify for two consecutive years in 2018 and 2019. In 2014 and 2017, Lau joined the award-winning television programs “Real Man” and “I Live Alone” as a regular cast member and received the Best Newcomer Award (2014) and Excellence Male Award (2017) at the MBC Entertainment Awards. Lau was cast in the main role for the movie “Final Recipe” alongside Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh, who also produced the film. He made his Hollywood debut in “A Dog’s Journey,” a sequel to 2017’s “A Dog’s Purpose.” (SD News) |
