Imported shrimp

Imported shrimp from three Ecuadorian companies are being pulled off shelves across China after the novel coronavirus was detected on packaging.

To eliminate epidemic and food safety risks, China has suspended imports from the three producers. Six samples recently collected from inside shipping containers and the outer packaging of frozen white shrimp tested positive for the coronavirus, the General Administration of Customs, the National Health Commission and the State Administration for Market Regulation said in a notice.

Flood response

The Ministry of Water Resources (MWR) on Sunday raised the emergency response for flood control to level II, the second-highest in the response system, as heavy downpours continued to lash vast stretches of the country.

Since July 4, alert-triggering floods have been observed in 212 rivers nationwide, among which 19 topped previous water level records, according to the MWR. The country upgraded the emergency response for flood control from level IV to level III last week.

Tangshan quake

Current observation and analysis show that a 5.1-magnitude earthquake that hit Guye District of Tangshan City on Sunday morning is an aftershock of the 7.8-magnitude quake that jolted Tangshan in 1976, and it’s unlikely that another quake of greater than a 5-magnitude will occur in the area in the short term, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The epicenter was monitored at 39.78 degrees north latitude and 118.44 degrees east longitude, with the quake striking at a depth of 10 kilometers, a release from the center said. People in nearby regions, including Beijing and Tianjin, felt strong tremors. No casualties have been reported so far.

Bus crash

The bus crash in Southwest China’s Guizhou Province that killed 21 people last week was intentional, local authorities said on Sunday.

The incident in the city of Anshun on July 7 saw the bus falling into the Hongshan reservoir, killing 21 people and injuring 15 others. Authorities say the driver deliberately crashed the bus in an act of “personal resentment.” An autopsy on his body showed high levels of ethanol in the driver’s gastric contents, blood and urine.
