NYU Shanghai campus

Shanghai New York University (NYU Shanghai) has announced that it would host more than 3,000 Chinese students from New York University and New York University Abu Dhabi for the fall semester in response to travel restrictions caused by COVID-19.

The students, consisting of about 2,300 undergraduates and 800 postgraduate students, will join some 1,700 students already registered in NYU Shanghai, according to the university’s announcement made public on Friday.

Emergency response

Beijing will lower its emergency response to COVID-19 from level II to III starting Monday, announced an official of the Beijing municipal government at a press conference on Sunday.

The city has effectively contained the spread of the virus after taking the most decisive, resolute and strict measures to control the source of infections at the very beginning, obstruct infection channels and beef up the prevention and control network, said Chen Bei, deputy secretary-general of the Beijing Municipal Government. From June 11 to Sunday, Beijing reported 335 confirmed COVID-19 cases in relation to the Xinfadi wholesale market, she said.

Anti-virus measures

Hong Kong on Sunday announced new anti-epidemic measures, including mandatory face mask wearing in all indoor public places, as daily confirmed cases for the first time surpassed 100 since the COVID-19 outbreak.

The move came a few days after the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government tightened control measures in the face of a worsening epidemic situation. There has been no sign that the coronavirus spread is brought under control, said HKSAR Chief Executive Carrie Lam at a press conference on Sunday afternoon, citing that more than 100 newly confirmed cases were reported on Sunday.

E-commerce market

China’s e-commerce market was the biggest in the world, according to the E-Commerce in China 2019 report released recently by the Ministry of Commerce, the People’s Daily overseas edition reported on Thursday.

As per the report, there were more than 900 million online shoppers in 2019. Total transaction volume of e-commerce reached 34.81 trillion yuan (US$4.98 trillion), among these, retail sales stood at 10.63 trillion yuan.
