Scholars elected

TWO scholars with the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) have been elected as members of Academia Europaea, SUSTech said Saturday.

Liu Junguo, a Chinese professor, is dedicated to research on water resources and ecological restoration. He has published over 170 academic papers in international journals such as Nature, Science and PNAS.

Didier Sornette, who joined SUSTech in 2019, is also a member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences. He focuses on various research fields including the statistical physics of complex systems, prediction of crises and extreme events, earthquake physics and prediction.

Roads finished

IN the first half of the year, Shenzhen’s transportation bureau finished eight roads which were halted over disputes in land requisition and relocations.

In addition, seven other unfinished roads are under construction and will be completed before the end of the year.

Departure intervals

THE Metro operator has shortened departure intervals for the trains on the Line 3 section between Tangkeng and Xinhua stations during peak hours to 2 minutes and 15 seconds.

The intervals for the off-peak period is 4 minutes and 30 seconds.

Ex-official jailed

LI HUANAN, former deputy secretary of the Shenzhen CPC committee and former secretary of the committee’s Politics and Law Commission, was sentenced to 15 years in jail by Guangzhou Intermediate People’s Court for taking bribes of 26 million yuan (US$3.72 million) and HK$10 million (US$1.29 million).

During his tenure between 2008 and 2018, Li abused his power and took bribes from others in exchange for business operation, project construction, court proceedings and job adjustments.
