SHENZHEN endeavors to create two brand names of “Shenzhen Blue” and “Shenzhen Green” to show its good air and water quality. The city’s air quality index ranked No. 4 of the 168 monitored cities in the country in the first five months of the year. The average PM2.5 concentration, a key indicator of air pollution, stood at 21 micrograms per cubic meter for the first five months, meeting EU standards: an annual PM2.5 concentration of 25 micrograms per cubic meter. Shenzhen has also made solid and remarkable progress in water treatment by eliminating 159 blackened and odorous streams and tributaries by the end of 2019. The water quality of the city’s nine main rivers, including the Maozhou, Shenzhen, Guanlan, Dasha and Longgang rivers and the border river with Dongguan, have been improved to meet the Category-V standards thanks to four years of treatment.
