Japanese animation masterpieces on screen

Fans may watch Japanese animated masterpieces by prominent directors such as Satoshi Kon (1963-2010) and Osamu Tezuka (1959-1989) at Broadway Cinematheque’s “Neon Genesis” event, which will screen 10 Japanese animated full-length movies and a few short ones. All the movies are in Japanese with Chinese or English subtitles except “Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust,” which is in English.

Tezuka’s prolific output, pioneering techniques and innovative redefinitions of genres earned him the title, “the father of manga.” Kon had an impact on a number of influential directors. Darren Aronofsky acknowledged the similarities to Kon’s “Perfect Blue” in his 2010 film “Black Swan.” Several critics and scholars have noted many striking similarities between Kon’s “Paprika” and Christopher Nolan’s “Inception.”

‘Metropolis’ (2001)

Time: 7:30 p.m., Sept. 3; 2 p.m., Sept. 12

Plot: Directed by Rintaro, the movie takes place in the muti-leveled, fascinating, megalopolis called Metropolis, which is loosely ruled by Duke Red, who is close to presenting his ultimate work, an advanced AI robot girl named Tima.

‘Perfect Blue’ (1997)

Plot: A pop singer gives up her career to become an actress, but she slowly goes insane when she starts being stalked by an obsessed fan and what seems to be a ghost of her past. The movie was directed by Satoshi Kon.

‘Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo’ (2012)

Plot: Shinji Ikari awakens in a new environment. Misato has formed a group that is separate from Nerv. The fight is far from over but the biggest struggle might be against humans and former allies. The movie was directed by Hideaki Anno.

‘The Tale of Osamu Tezuka: I’m Son-Goku’ (1989)

Plot: Directed by Osamu Tezuka, the movie is a biographical animation focusing on Tezuka’s affection for animation and for the Chinese legend “Journey to the West.”
