US coronavirus deaths to hit 200,000 milestone

The United States is closing in on the somber milestone of 200,000 deaths from COVID-19 as more than half of states are reporting a rise in cases.

More than 6.7 million people have been infected with the virus and 199,511 have died, according to data from Johns Hopkins University (JHU) on Sunday.

The climb comes after many states had seen case numbers decline following a summer resurgence of infections. The World Health Organization (WHO) advised governments in May that positivity rates should hold steady at 5 percent or lower for at least two weeks before businesses reopen.

Three killed after rare storm batters Greece

Three people have died after Cyclone Ianos, a rare storm known as “medicane,” battered Greece, flooding streets and homes, Greek authorities said on Sunday.

Ianos uprooted trees and caused power cuts on the Ionian islands and the western Peloponnese. It swept through central Greece on Saturday, hitting the cities of Karditsa and Farsala before it moved south to the island of Crete.

The body of a man was found under the collapsed roof of his house in a village near Karditsa on Sunday, the Athens News Agency said. On Saturday, a 63-year-old man was found dead in the same area and the body of an elderly woman was found in nearby Farsala, fire brigade officials said.

Criminal probe opened into John Bolton book

A U.S. federal grand jury is investigating potential disclosures of classified information in the book former national security adviser John Bolton published in June over strong objections from the Trump administration, a source familiar with the situation said last week.

The development signals that Bolton may face much more severe legal trouble than just the pending lawsuit that seeks to strip him of the proceeds from “The Room Where It Happened,” the tell-all account that generated a slew of brutal press for President Donald Trump.

TikTok confirms deal with Oracle, Walmart

Video-sharing social networking platform TikTok on Saturday voiced hope that an agreement reached by its Chinese parent company ByteDance with Oracle and Walmart will “resolve the security concerns of the U.S. administration and settle questions around TikTok’s future in the United States.”

The Los Angeles-based company issued a statement on Saturday afternoon, hours after U.S. President Donald Trump said he had approved a deal between the three parties.(SD-Agencies)
