War memorial hall

The country’s only memorial hall featuring the complete history of the Chinese People’s Volunteers in the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-53), often referred to as the Korean War in the West, reopened on Saturday in Liaoning Province.

Located in the border city Dandong — about 280 kilometers from Pyongyang, capital of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea — the renovated and expanded memorial hall, which offers free entry to the public, consists of an exhibition hall, a memorial tower, a national defense education park and a panorama hall.

Man jailed

The Panlong District People’s Court in Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province, sentenced a man to 18 months in prison on Monday for negligently causing the death of an 18-year-old female student a year ago.

Luo Bingqian, the 22-year-old defendant, was also ordered to pay 63,257 yuan (US$9,336) in compensation to the victim’s mother, Chen Meilian, in a concurrent civil trial for economic losses including funeral and transport expenses and lost wages. Luo pleaded guilty on Saturday and said he was willing to accept punishment.

Chang’e-5 lunar probe

China plans to launch the Chang’e-5 lunar probe by the end of this year, a senior designer said at the 2020 China Space Conference in Fuzhou, capital of East China’s Fujian Province.

Yu Dengyun, deputy chief designer of China’s lunar exploration program, said preparations are progressing smoothly, and the Chang’e-5 probe will make a soft landing on the moon and bring samples back to the Earth. China’s current lunar program involves three phases: orbiting, landing and return. The first two phases have been completed successfully, said Yu. The Chang’e-5 probe is expected to realize lunar sample collection, takeoff from the moon, rendezvous and docking on lunar orbit and high-speed reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere.

Chinese institutions, universities and enterprises have jointly released principles governing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by children.

The principles aim to effectively reduce the possible negative impacts of AI on children while providing them with better education, said an official of the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence. (SD-Agencies)
