Recently, a new phrase, “Disney’s fugitive princess,” has come into view. As many girls have claimed to be Disney’s fugitive princess, there are still questions about “What is Disney’s fugitive princess?”

Originally, if someone said you were really a Disney’s fugitive princess, it meant he thought you were as beautiful as a Disney princess, but you are not living in Disneyland. However, now, Disney’s fugitive princess not only simply praises the appearance of a good-looking female but also represents the good quality of Disney princesses, of females.

First, there were Disney’s early princesses, too perfect to have an independent personality, such as Snow White, Cinderella and Aurora. Let’s take Snow White as an example.

We could say she’s too perfect to be the main character in a movie because for a movie character, being perfect is boring. In addition to being boring, Snow White does not show any resistance or independent spirit in the film. Similarly, the two other princesses of the same period are the same weak images waiting to be rescued by the princes.

Second, it is the age of imperfect and feminist-tinged minority princesses, such as Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas and Mulan. The princess movies of this period, though they had obvious feminist advancement, still had the fatal flaw that kept a stranglehold on females.

At the beginning of the film, each of the princesses faces a dilemma: They can’t find a suitable husband, or the blind date is not attractive to them.

As the film progresses, however, the marital problems are solved along with the adventure. There is an essential difference between male and female rebellion.

Third, Disney’s new-age princess live for their own selves, such as Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, Anna and Elsa. In the new era, the story of princesses is no longer about love, and they begin to find themselves, to pursue their own life. Marriage and family have become less important, or less urgent, in the lives of women in the new age.

The characteristics of Disney princesses have always reflected the value judgment and pursuit of women in their era.

Nowadays, our girls do not call ourselves Disney’s fugitive princesses because of beauty, but because of the yearning to become a new era princess with pursuit, bravery and independence. We create a valuable connotation for Disney’s fugitive princess by ourselves.
