SHENHAI Yihao (Deep Sea No. 1), China’s mother vessel for the manned deep-sea submersible Jiaolong, and the country’s largest cutter-suction dredger, Tian Kun Hao, will arrive in Shenzhen and open to the public free of charge during the China Marine Economy Expo (CMEE) 2020 to be held Oct. 15-18 at the Shenzhen Convention & Exhibition Center in Futian District.

The two ships are scheduled to arrive at the Shekou Cruise Homeport on Oct. 13, according to a press conference held by the Shenzhen Municipal Government Information Office at the Civic Center yesterday. They will open to the public for a free visit between Oct. 14 and 15. Citizens can apply for a ticket and find more information via the WeChat account, szcimee.

Shenhai Yihao is a comprehensive scientific expedition vessel as well as the country’s first self-developed, specially designed mothership for a manned submersible.

The vessel measures 90.2 meters long and 16.8 meters wide. With a designed displacement tonnage of 4,500 tons, it has a cruising capacity of over 12,000 nautical miles (22,224 kilometers), according to the ship’s manufacturer Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group under China Shipbuilding Industry Corp.

The 140-meter-long Tian Kun Hao, built by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co. Ltd., is the largest dredger of its kind in Asia and can dig as deep as 35 meters under the seafloor and dredge 6,000 cubic meters per hour.

This year’s CMEE, which will last one more day than last year, is themed “Openness and Cooperation, Mutual Benefits and Win-win” and will cover an area of 60,000 square meters — 63 percent more than last year.

The expo will also be available virtually, providing those who can’t attend the expo in person a chance to see what’s on offer.

More than 600 firms and organizations engaged in over 40 subdivisions of the marine industry have registered to set up booths at the expo, including 67 Sino-foreign joint ventures and foreign-funded enterprises.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, the expo will set up a special booth to showcase the city’s marine development history.

The expo will also feature a series of forums to seek wisdom on development of the marine economy.

Shenzhen has set a goal to build itself into a global marine-centered city by the middle of this century.

The city’s GDP of the marine industry last year reached nearly 260 billion yuan (US$38.2 billion), up 8 percent year on year, according to the news conference.

China Marine Economy Expo was first held in Shenzhen last year.
