SZ ranks 4th in attracting digital professionals
    2020-10-14  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN has been ranked as one of the world’s top five cities in attracting talented digital professionals, following Dublin, Berlin, Singapore and followed by Milan, according to a new report.

The 2020 Global Digital Talent Development Report, jointly released Monday by Internet Development and Governance Research Center under Economics and Management School of Tsinghua University and LinkedIn China, says half of the talented digital workers in Europe have been relocated to the Asia-Pacific region.

The report defines talented digital professionals as those with digital skills, including those who administer digital strategies, researchers with in-depth analytic abilities and skilled professionals in digital research, operation, manufacturing and marketing. Those with basic digital knowledge are not regarded as digital talent.

The report analyzes distribution of talented digital professionals in 31 cities and regions by grouping them into ICT (information and communications technology) industry and non-ICT industry. The ICT industry includes software and IT service, and Internet and computer hardware. The non-ICT industry includes manufacturing, finance and consumer products. The result shows that talented digital professionals enjoy a higher percentage in the non-ICT industry, indicating digitalization has penetrated into different walks of life and become a tendency of industrial development.

In the non-ICT group, Los Angeles, New York, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates and London make up the top five places.

The talented digital professionals mainly work in four industries — manufacturing, finance, consumer products and corporate services. The talented digital professionals of Chinese cities in manufacturing, finance and consumer products enjoy high percentages in the work force.

In the category of consumer products, Shenzhen takes the lead among major world cities, followed by Guangzhou, Milan, Hong Kong and Barcelona. In manufacturing, Shenzhen takes fourth place following Suzhou, Munich and Shanghai.

“Different industries, sectors and regions in the world are fully geared for digital transformation in the post-COVID-19 period. The trend of the digital economy is unstoppable,” Professor Chen Yubo with the Internet Development and Governance Research Center said.

The report indicates that the Asia-Pacific region, especially China, is becoming increasingly attractive to digital professionals and suggests China should create an overall environment for the development of talented digital professionals, especially in professional exchanges, improving the digital skills of traditional industries, increasing resources in key tech spheres and enhancing basic research.
