What is hope?
    2020-10-14  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Christy Ye, RDF International School

Hope is the dream and desire of human beings. With dreams and aspirations, people will strive towards their goals; on the other hand, people without hope are idle. Their life has no direction and they are like the living dead. Having a dream and a wish when we are young helps to guide us as we grow.

How can hope be fulfilled? Hope is not a simple thing. It requires down-to-earth, unremitting effort, moving step by step to achieve one’s dreams. NASA Chinese engineer Wayne Lee, for example, was hoping to explore space. In high school he read about space. His summer vacations during college were spent studying about space. He chose to attend the Space Research Institute and after graduation entered NASA, the U.S. space agency. He worked hard for many years and became chief engineer of the Mars landing system, an assignment which fulfilled a childhood dream.

However, the process of realizing a dream is not always easy. Working hard and mastering your craft will confirm that “God pays off those who work hard.” For example, when Madame Curie was in middle school, she hoped, with hard work, that she would someday contribute to her country.

After graduating, she was determined to continue her studies but the financial situation at home delayed that dream. She did not give up though, and found a job as a tutor and saved her money and eventually went to study in France. Her education was particularly difficult due to the language differences, but she continued studying and earned double degrees with high honors. Her research leading to the discovery of radium, as well as her work in physics, chemistry and medicine made a profound contribution to the well-being of mankind.

From the above examples, we can see that human beings can do great things when they have dreams.

Although I am still young, I have a dream and a desire from childhood. With hope and hard work, dreams can lead to a better future for us all.
