西贝货
    2020-10-26  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Meaning:

“西” means “west,” “贝” means “shell,” and “货” means “goods.” This saying is a play on words as the Chinese characters “西” and “贝” together make “贾” (jiǎ, a Chinese surname), which is a homophone of “假” (meaning “fake”). Therefore, Chinese netizens coined this term to refer to “fake goods, copycats,” especially used as a euphemism by antique dealers. In some online novels, it is also used to refer to young women posing as men or those who have their bodies occupied by another soul after some supernatural happenings.

Example:

A: 丽丽真舍得花钱,昨天我看见她背了一只爱马仕的铂

金包。

Lìlì zhēn shědé huāqián,zuótiān wǒ kànjiàn tā bēi le yīzhī àimǎshì de bójīnbāo。

Li Li is so extravagant. I saw her with a Hermes Birkin bag yesterday.

B: 她那只包是网购的西贝货,没那么贵。

Tā nàzhī bāo shì wǎnggòu de xībèihuò,méi nàme guì。

She bought that one online and it’s a copycat, not as expensive as you think.
