CHINA Southern Airlines inaugurated a cargo flight between Shenzhen and Frankfurt in Germany yesterday, further expanding its global cargo network and bringing the city’s international cargo destinations to 22 cities on five continents.

This is the second long-haul freight flight following the Shenzhen-Chicago flight that was put into operation five months ago. The B777F on the Shenzhen-Chicago route has carried out 84 flights, delivering 7,992 tons of anti-COVID-19 materials as well as materials for production.

The brand-new cargo plane B777F has a loading capacity of 95 tons, and will operate three times a week. It marks a new step by China Southern Airlines to enhance its cargo network presence in Shenzhen.

“The freight flight between Shenzhen and Frankfurt, an important cargo hub in Europe, will be an import bridge for cargo turnover between the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Europe. Through the transshipment and logistics network in Frankfurt, the freight flight from Shenzhen will cover most cities in Europe,” Gong Weiguo, vice manager of China Southern Air Logistics Co. Ltd., said at the inaugural ceremony.

“Shenzhen is a strategic market of China Southern Airlines and a model of high-quality development. The opening of this long-haul cargo flight will further improve connectivity of Shenzhen’s cargo network with the rest of the world,” said Gong. In addition to opening new routes, China Southern Airlines has also refitted some passenger planes into cargo planes and put them on routes to Sydney, Melbourne, Dubai and Manila, to meet the demand for anti-COVID-19 materials and equipment.

In the first nine months of this year, the cargo throughput of Shenzhen airport increased by 7.44 percent year on year to 993,900 tons, ranking third among Chinese cities, according to data released by Shenzhen airport yesterday.

Among them, the throughput of international cargo increased by 26 percent year on year, the highest growth in the past three years, to 319,000 tons.

In the new flight season, Shenzhen airport will handle 676 cargo flights a week. China Cargo Airlines and SF Express will open cargo routes to Amsterdam, Los Angeles and Jakarta. In the domestic market, Longhao Airlines has started an air cargo service for the Shenzhen-Wuxi-Tianjin route starting Sunday.
