Human and shark coexist
    2020-11-04  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Fernicky Huang, RDF International School

The shark — friendly or dangerous? To find the answer, it might be helpful to know what happened in the U.S. in 1916.

In 1916, there were a series of shark attacks along the coast of New Jersey. Little Chet, a 10-year -old boy, was one of the fortunate survivors in these attacks. As usual, the seawater was sparkling in the sunset, and Chet was still swimming in the sea, without noticing that danger was approaching. The shark was coming. As the dark creature slowly approached, the blade-like dorsal fin became more noticeable. Chet suddenly realized that he had become the prey of the murderous underwater killer.

Why do sharks go to shallow waters and attack humans? Of course, sharks live in deep waters. But if the sea resources or their natural habitats are exploited and destroyed by humans, the sharks may choose to come to our areas, such as shallow waters, which is extremely dangerous for us. So now, I have a question: How can human and shark coexist?

I think the most important point is that we need to protect natural resources, the environment, and marine creatures. Only when we leave enough space and resources for the sharks, they can stay in their habitats and keep away from our living zones. So, what should we do? For example, humans can try to avoid catching too many marine creatures or upsetting the ecological balance. We can also start with some small things to reduce marine pollution. The easiest and most direct way is to refuse to use single-use plastics and if we use them, make sure we recycle them properly.

As long as we start with the small things mentioned above, we can not only improve the rigid coexistence relationship between sharks and humans but also protect the marine animals and maintain the balance of nature.

Moreover, we can swim without fear in the ocean and feel the infinite pleasure the ocean brings to us. Being aware of the significance of environmental protection, I firmly believe that, in the future, humans will eventually coexist in harmony with sharks.
