Upcoming shows at SZ Concert Hall

On Nov. 8, Shenzhen Concert Hall’s Beautiful Sunday free concert will feature the original works of local composer Zhang Yihui, who is a teacher at the Music and Dance School of Shenzhen University. The audience members will listen to songs related to Shenzhen like “Shennan Boulevard” and “From 1983 to Eternity.” Singer Xu Yanqing from Zhejiang Province, flutist Cai Yu, as well as several singers from Shenzhen University will perform.

On Nov. 14, He Liyan, a member of the Shenzhen Piano Association, lauded as “a young talent from the East” by the Rubinstein Piano Festival in Israel, will perform a piano four hands concert together with young pianist Zeng Yifan. The program will include works by Beethoven and Brahms as well as familiar Chinese tunes adapted from songs and traditional folk music.

On Nov. 21, local young pianist Bi Yulin and others will perform a concert featuring the works of Beethoven as a tribute to the great composer’s 250th birth anniversary.

On Nov. 28, zheng (Chinese plucked board zither) player Yuan Yilin, ruan (Chinese moon guitar) player Lai Lishan and yangqin (Chinese struck zither) player Wu Xuanxuan, all music teachers at Shenzhen Arts School, will present a traditional Chinese concert together with their high-achieving students. They will perform in solos, duets and trios.

Admission is free, but tickets are required. Those interested can apply via Shenzhen Concert Hall’s WeChat account “szyinyuet.”

Meanwhile, with Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (SZSO) assistant conductor Chai Haofu at the helm, the orchestra will present Dvorák’s beloved cello concerto and Tchaikovsky’s swansong symphony “Pathetique” this Friday night (tickets are between 50 and 880 yuan). Young cellist Nie Jiapeng will collaborate as the soloist.

Yang Xuefei, one of the world’s finest classical guitarists, will perform new pieces from her latest album “Sketches of China” as well as beloved Western compositions this Sunday night (tickets are between 80 and 380 yuan). Talented young pipa (a pluck string Chinese instrument) player Sun Ying and master flutist Zhang Weiliang will collaborate.
