A total of 243 short videos about primary and middle students in Shenzhen doing labor work earned about 1 million visits online during the voting stage of a short video competition, which kicked off on November 6.

In the short videos, the students show their good command of labor skills , which cover a wide range of individual and group labor work activities organized by schools, including cooking, woodworking, gardening, handicraft, garbage classification, voluntary work, and bike repairing.

The short videos also win great popularity among the parents. Through watching the videos together with their kids, the parent-child relationships will become closer and the children’s interest in doing labor work will be trigged by the performance of their peers even if they are not participants in the competition.

According to Li Guijuan, vice dean of the Shenzhen Institute of Education Science, labor work education can greatly enhance the students’ capability in doing hand work and exercise their independence, perseverance and teamwork spirit. She said it also propels the cultivation of the teaching staff and the standardization of relevant courses of labor work education at schools.

“The competition serves as a good demonstration for the development of labor education through combining online and offline education, and improves the environment and atmosphere of labor education in Shenzhen,” according to Tang Xuemei, a staffer with the Shenzhen Institute of Education Science.

The institute had called up students at compulsory education stages to film short videos on daily labor work and sign up for the event. (Wang Haolan)
