Hog production

HOG production in China saw rapid recovery in October, leading to an increased pork supply and further price declines, official data shows.

The number of hogs available for slaughter last month soared 26.9 percent year-on-year, up 4.2 percent from September, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

The number of breeding sows in stock surged 31.5 percent from the same period last year, and rose 3.1 percent month-on-month in October. Pork prices declined following 19 consecutive months of year-on-year increases, as hog production and supply continued to rise from the beginning of the year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

Gas supply

CHINA’S supply of natural gas will be sufficient to meet a spike in demand during the winter heating season, the country’s top economic planner said Tuesday.

The available natural gas reserves for winter heating this year increased by 5 billion cubic meters compared with last year, allowing more flexibility to ensure an adequate supply when demand peaks, said Meng Wei, a spokesperson with the National Development and Reform Commission, at a press conference.

China saw a 14.6-percent year-on-year increase in its daily average natural-gas consumption in the first 11 days of November, Meng noted.

Textile industry

PROFITS in China’s industrial textile industry surged more than 240 percent year-on-year from January to September, official data show.

Major companies in the industry — industrial textile firms with annual turnovers of at least 20 million yuan (about US$3 million) — saw solid growth in both sales and profits in the first nine months of the year, with profits totaling 28.57 billion yuan and revenues jumping 32.95 percent to 232.3 billion yuan.
