Themed “Arts Matter, Fringe Together,” the 11th Shenzhen Fringe Festival is here again and runs through Nov. 29. A total of 43 art groups and artists are presenting an art fiesta to Shenzheners around the corner.

This year, the festival focuses on four major areas: Crossover Cooperation, Youth Cultivation, New Work Commission and Local Participation, and consists of six sections: Fringe Stage, Fringe Open, Fringe Picnic, Fringe in Town, Fringe Shop and Fringe Online. Public spaces such as rooftops, parks, streets, bus stops and book bars are turned into performance venues, becoming parts of Shenzhen’s culture and spirit.

The festival has even invited Evening Cinema, a band from Japan, to create the theme song for Shenzhen Fringe.

Fringe Stage

Drama ‘Fox Tale’

The drama “Fox Tale” will be presented to the audience by Fat Bird Theater in the Nanshan Culture Center. The drama tells the story of a fox that fails to become an immortal three times in three different periods: the Era of Flood, the Digital Age and the Eternal Age, and finally becomes a water-spouting ghost.

Founded in 2005, Fat Bird Theater consists of artists from different countries and regions. They advocate cross-field performances and combine other elements into the traditional drama performances.

Time: 8-9 p.m., Nov. 24

Venue: Nanshan Culture Center (南山区文化馆)

Metro: Line 1 to Taoyuan Station (桃园站), Exit B, and then walk northward for 20 minutes

Drama ‘La Town’

Created by renowned Chinese artist Cao Fei and scored by sound artist and experimental electronic musician Li Jinsong, “La Town” depicts the past and fate of a small town in an audio-visual presentation.

There is a place called “Night Museum,” which is open only at night, and is currently exhibiting a large exhibition about the town of La Town. It seems that everyone has heard the story about La Town. At that time, after an unknown disaster, there was no sunlight in La Town; the polar night occupied almost all of it, and the occasional white nights were recorded in the town’s history. As time passes by, the stories of the town’s past are stored in the museum, which becomes the only access to awareness of La Town’s past.

Time: 8-9 p.m., Nov. 26

Venue: Nanshan Cultural and Sports Center (南山文体中心)

Metro: Line 1 to Taoyuan Station (桃园站), Exit B, and then walk northward for 10 minutes

Fringe in Town

Nantou Ancient Town will be a venue for the Fringe Festival for the first time. From Nov. 27 to 29, a three-day art carnival, divided into “Day Trips” and “Night Trips,” will rock the old town. There you can watch dozens of shows in the streets during the weekend.

Shirley, a Colombian musician who has appeared on the China Central TV Spring Festival Gala, and the members of her band will present “The Night of Jazz.” Luka, a virtuoso player of the didgeridoo and electronic music producer, will bring “Music of the Didgeridoo.” Performance artist Bill Aitchison and partner Johanna Thompson will present “The Game,” discussing and reflecting on social issues such as gender equality, youthfulness, and self-examination.

Dates: Nov. 27-29

Venue: Nantou Ancient Town, Nanshan District (南山区南头古城)

Metro: Line 1 to Taoyuan Station (桃园站), Exit B, and then walk northward for 20 minutes
