Shortage of containers seen at Yantian Port
    2020-11-25  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

TRUCK drivers were seen waiting in lines to collect containers at Yantian Port recently, CCTV Finance reported.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the circulation speed of containers slowed, resulting in a shortage of containers in the country.

A driver surnamed Shen said that he went to the port to collect containers six or seven times, and failed to pick up empty containers twice.

Yantian Port, one of the ports with the highest container throughput around the globe, showed insufficient transport capabilities in August and September this year.

To solve the problem, Yantian Port added 10 shipping lines. However, the move made the shortage of containers even more noticeable.

Song Daning with Dapeng Customs said that Yantian Port handled over 1.46 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers in October, breaking the record of all single ports in the world.

At present, Yantian Port is making efforts to transport empty containers from Hong Kong to satisfy demand at the port.

Staff with a logistics company said that the situation of empty containers waiting to be collected has changed into drivers looking for empty containers. Anyone who has containers has a say in trade, according to the staff.

Staff with the Dongguan Nanfang Zhongji logistics equipment manufacturing company, a subsidiary of CIMC, told the reporter with CCTV Finance that their container orders have been scheduled as far ahead as March next year.

The company’s production capacity increased by 30 percent, with each production line being able to produce 370 containers compared to the previous 270 containers, said Liu Xiaoxu, deputy general manager of the Dongguan Nanfang Zhongji logistics equipment manufacturing company.

It is reported that more than 95 percent of the world’s containers are from China, with China’s CIMC, COSCO Shipping and CXIC Group among the leading producers.
