Philanthropy institute in SZ celebrates fifth anniversary
    2020-12-01  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE China Global Philanthropy Institute (CGPI), the first independently registered philanthropy institute in China, has celebrated its fifth anniversary in Shenzhen, Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

Ma Weihua, chairman of the board of directors of CGPI, presented letters of appointment to Ai Luming, a new director, and Yan Jun, the new president of CGPI, at an anniversary celebration that was held Friday.

Ai is the founder and chairman of Wuhan Dangdai Science & Technology Industries Group Co. Ltd.

CGPI was launched in 2015 by a joint initiative of five Chinese and U.S. philanthropists, namely Bill Gates, Ray Dalio, Niu Gensheng, He Qiaonyu and Ye Qingjun. Ma Weihua, former president of China Merchants Bank, is the institute’s first chairman of the board, and Wang Zhenyao, professor of the Beijing Normal University, is the first president.

Over the past five years, the institute has successively carried out international charity management programs, and cooperated with Harvard University, Audencia Business School, Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, University of Geneva and Beijing Normal University.

Bill Gates, one of the initiators of CGPI and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, said that the influence of philanthropy also depends on the depth of cooperation.

The institute is committed to promoting the exchange of ideas and sharing of best practices among philanthropists across China to help them achieve greater influence, said Gates.

According to CGPI’s 2020 Alumni Development Report, as of the end of October 2020, CGPI alumni could be found across China, and 50 international students came from 20 countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Russia, Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

At least 82.4 percent of CGPI alumni made personal donations in 2019, among which 48 alumni donated more than 1 million yuan (US$151,800) annually. (Zhang Yu)
