Beethoven piano sonata recital by Chen Sa
    2020-12-03  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Chinese pianist Chen Sa will present Beethoven’s piano sonatas No. 20, 21, 25 and 32 this weekend in Shenzhen.

Chen is no stranger to the local audience. In 1996, she won the fourth prize in the Leeds International Piano Competition and has since appeared with numerous celebrated conductors and leading orchestras, and in major festivals and venues around the world. She was also awarded the Best Polonaise Performance and fourth prize at the 2000 International Chopin Competition, and the bronze medal at the Van Cliburn Competition in 2005.

Beethoven wrote his 32 piano sonatas between 1795 and 1822. The “Piano Sonata No. 25 in G Major, Op. 79” is alternatively titled “Cuckoo” or “Sonatina,” and is notable for its shortness.

The “Piano Sonata No. 21 in C Major, Op. 53,” known as “Waldstein,” is one of the three most notable sonatas of Beethoven’s middle period. Completed in the summer of 1804 and surpassing Beethoven’s previous piano sonatas in its scope, “Waldstein” is a key early work of Beethoven’s “Heroic” decade and set a standard for piano composition in the grand manner.

The “Piano Sonata No. 32 in C Minor, Op. 111” is the last of Beethoven’s piano sonatas. The work was written between 1821 and 1822. Like other late period sonatas, it contains fugal elements.

“I planned to play some doleful pieces of Beethoven for the concert in this special year of 2020, but later I thought, why not play some tunes expressing the greatness of life,” said Chen.
