LED by young conductor Sun Yifan, the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (SZSO) performed a New Year’s concert at the theater of Mixc World in Nanshan District on Wednesday.

The program included familiar tunes such as Chinese music “Dance of the Golden Snake,” the Chinese folk song “Jasmine Flower,” Bernstein’s “Candide Overture,” soundtracks from movies like “Legends of the Fall” and the “James Bond” series, and “Mambo” from the musical “West Side Story.” The concert was warmly received by the audience.

Sun, a talented young conductor, was champion of the 10th International Conducting Competition Jeunesses Musicales Bucharest in 2019.

The Shenzhen Association of Professional Artists (SAPA), the organizer of the event, also arranged a mini exhibition of Chinese paintings at the lobby of the theater.

Featuring works by Guan Shanyue from the collection of the Guan Shanyue Art Museum, the exhibition presented the late master’s “Sui Zhao Tu” (“The Beginning of an Era”), which captures some vibrant flowers he saw at a flower fair in 1980.

Launched in August, the SAPA is a non-profit organization started by SZSO, the Shenzhen Opera and Dance Theater, the Shenzhen Cantonese Opera Troupe, Shenzhen Arts School, the Shenzhen Art Museum and others.

It aims to serve and organize events for performing and fine arts professionals in the city.

A choral concert also organized by SAPA will be held this evening at Shenzhen Concert Hall. Conducted by Luo Shenka and featuring soprano Huang Xiyin, pianist Zhang Yun, and the SZSO Chorus, the concert will present 19 classical vocal works from China and the West.
