AN award ceremony for the Global 5G Application Competition 2020 will be held at Shenzhen Bay Sports Center on Tuesday, the city government announced at a press conference held by the Shenzhen Municipal Government Information Office at the Civic Center in Futian District yesterday.

Eleven winners will be announced at the ceremony. They are expected to receive generous prizes and enjoy the city’s preferential industrial policy support when realizing the industrialization of their 5G works in Shenzhen. Several measures on development of innovative 5G applications will also be announced. The ceremony will invite academics, entrepreneurs and research experts to discuss the impact of the 5G technology revolution on industrial change.

A total of 125 teams from six countries and regions, including China, the United States, Germany, South Korea, Australia and China’s Hong Kong, participated in the competition, basically covering the key regions with the fastest 5G deployment in the world.

These teams competed in 10 tracks, such as 5G+Industrial Internet, 5G+Smart City, 5G+Transportation, 5G+Smart Grid, and 5G+Digital Multimedia. Among them, 5G+Digital Multimedia, 5G+Industrial Internet and 5G+Transportation ranked as the top 3. In terms of the entrants, leading enterprises in the fields of communication, display and electronics such as Huawei and ZTE play important roles, while small and medium-sized enterprises are also outstanding.

“We want to attract talents who are dedicated to the development of the 5G industry to settle in Shenzhen,” said Wu You, deputy secretary general of the Shenzhen Municipal Government.

Guo Ziping, head of the Shenzhen Municipal Development and Reform Commission,  said the competition aims to lay the foundations of 5G application ecology and promote the development of the 5G industry in Shenzhen.

Shenzhen is committed to building itself into a global first-class 5G application benchmark city. In August 2020, Shenzhen was acknowledged as the first city to be fully covered by standalone 5G networks with 45,000 5G base stations. By the end of November, the number of 5G base stations had exceeded 46,000, achieving a citywide coverage with 5G networks.

In 2019, the output value of the electronic information industry in Shenzhen was approximately 2 trillion yuan (US$305.3 billion), accounting for nearly one-sixth of the country’s total. The added value of the new generation of the information technology industry was 508.62 billion yuan, accounting for 18.9 percent of the city’s GDP.
