Cash reward offered to excellent waste sorters

SHENZHEN will offer a total of 48.35 million yuan (US$7.4 million) in cash reward to families, individuals, residential estates and collective units that have actively and effectively taken part in waste sorting this year to stimulate people’s enthusiasm for garbage sorting, the city’s urban management authority said at a news conference yesterday.

It will be the first time for the city to offer a reward to “good waste sorters” after it mandated waste sorting Sept. 1.

The prize money will be divided among 333 collective units, 433 residential estates, 1,693 families and 703 individuals across the city, which have been recognized as “green collective units,” “green residential estates,” “active individuals,” or “good garbage-sorting families,” according to the Shenzhen Municipal Urban Administration and Law Enforcement Bureau.

Each individual and family will receive 1,000 yuan and 2,000 yuan, respectively, while each residential estate will be rewarded 100,000 yuan per 1,000 households, capped at 300,000 yuan, according to the bureau. Directors of collective units who are responsible for waste sorting will be rewarded 1,000 yuan each.

Among the 433 residential estates are Meilinyicun, Caitiancun and Yitiancun in Futian District, Buxinyicun and Buxin’ercun in Bao’an District, Xinweicun in Nanshan District, and Minlecun in Longhua District.

Every resident in Caitiancun is aware of garbage sorting and over 90 percent of them practice garbage sorting in their daily life, according to the bureau.

The “green collective units” include government institutions, schools, hospitals, enterprises and social organizations.

Shenzhen Cuizhu Foreign Language Experimental School in Luohu District, which has been sorting garbage for almost five years, is well known for creating a program called “environmental protection bank” to promote garbage sorting among students.

The program has a system available to record the amount of recyclable items such as milk boxes, paper and glass collected by its students each day. Students are then rewarded with points based on the amount of recyclables they have placed in the bank.

According to Huang Wen, a teacher with the school, the bank program now has been promoted in 44 schools in the city.

Huang said that they hope to help students form a habit to sort garbage so that the students can in turn encourage their parents to do so.

He Na’na, a resident in Yantian District whose family has been recognized as a “good garbage-sorting family,” said they have two garbage bins at home. One is for kitchen waste and the second for other waste. In addition, they set up two areas to collect hazardous waste and recyclables. Her family members have also worked as volunteers to supervise waste classification at the residential estate they live in. Their service time reached 1,360 hours as of the end of October.
