Gender report depicts traits of SZ women

SHENZHEN women are financially independent, versatile, and keen on participating in public affairs, in addition to being smart, chic, confident, open-minded and innovative, according to a gender statistics report.

The report looks into the development of men and women from the perspectives of the city’s population characteristics, marriage and family status, education, employment and income, social security, health care, participation in politics and public affairs and legal protection.

According to the report, Shenzhen had a permanent population of over 13.43 million in 2019, and the permanent population aged 0-17 exceeded 2 million. For every 10 residents, there were 1.56 children.

The sex ratio in the city in 2019 was 119.23 males per 100 females and the sex ratio at birth was 112.8 boys per 100 girls.

The economic status of Shenzhen women is quite high and they manifest strong home purchasing power, said the report. In 2019, Shenzhen had 636,700 female homeowners. The sex ratio of homeowners in the city was 96.75 males per 100 females.

Shenzhen women are also versatile and have wide-ranging interests in arts and sports.

Shenzhen had 33,900 female sports instructors in 2019 and the sex ratio of instructors in the city was 72.94 males per 100 females.

The health-care benefits of Shenzhen women are also well guaranteed. In 2019, the city government invested more than 103 million yuan (US$15.95 million) in free screening for breast and cervical cancers.

Shenzhen women are active participants in public affairs, giving full play to their gender advantages to offer suggestions in safeguarding the rights and interests of women and children, said the report. In 2019, the sex ratio of jurors in Shenzhen was 82.13 males per 100 females.

The 2019 gender statistics report was jointly released by the city’s statistics bureau, the working committee on women and children, and gender equality promotion office. (Zhang Yu)
