New year gifts bring warmth to Gula kids
    2021-01-06  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A batch of winter clothes, books and stationery sent from Shenzhen recently arrived at the Gula Township Central Primary School in Tibet Autonomous Region’s Chayu County, bringing warmth, knowledge and smiles to local kids.

Located 120 kilometers away from the county town and at an elevation of 2,500 meters, the school has 292 students. As the majority of local lands are barren, most students come from families with very limited income. In winter times, the heavy snow and complicated geographical conditions pose great challenges for students and teachers to go to school. For many, the trip from home to school takes from one to three hours.

When Sun Ying, head of a volunteer teacher project initiated by the Shenzhen Project Care project, learned of the difficulties the kids face on a visit to Chayu County in early October, she decided to do something for the kids. With the support of Shenzhen Jieshun Poverty Alleviation Foundation, the batch of supplies arrived at the Gula Township Central Primary School in mid-December and were distributed to the kids at a ceremony held on December 18.

Although the foundation members could not join the ceremony on-site due to the pandemic, Liu Cuiying, director of the Shenzhen Jieshun Poverty Alleviation Foundation, said that they were still moved by the kids’ smiles. According to her, the foundation will continue to make efforts to help more kids in need.
