THE TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) throughput of domestic and foreign trade handled at Shenzhen western port area reached 11.84 million TEUs in 2020, up by 3.6 percent year on year, a new record since the throughput of the ports reached over 10 million TEUs in 2019.
The foreign trade throughput handled at the western port area reached 11.11 million TEUs in 2020, up by 2.8 percent year on year, statistics from Shenzhen Customs showed.
Due to the impact of COVID-19 in the first half of the year, many cargo-forwarding and shipment companies reduced liners, causing business to shrink in the Shenzhen western port area.
Since the resumption of production and supporting policies of Shenzhen Customs to relieve burdens of enterprises in the second half of the year, the marine shipment business started recovering.
The Shenzhen western port area is the major passage of ocean-going vessels in South China, offering berths for super large vessels. In 2020, Shekou Customs implemented a “one ship, one policy” escort plan and closed-loop measures to ensure the arrival of scientific expedition ships and vessels of China National Offshore Oil Corp., and thus guaranteed the operation of Liuhua Oilfield in the South China Sea that can produce 880,000 tons of petroleum a year. |
