Container throughput hits 26m TEUs
    2021-01-13  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE container throughput of Shenzhen Port exceeded 26.54 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) in 2020, up 3.02 percent year on year, realizing positive growth despite the impact of the pandemic, according to a report by Shenzhen Economic Daily yesterday.

A total of 265 million tons of cargo were shipped in 2020, up by 2.79 percent over the previous year.

Shenzhen Port consists of Yantian, Nanshan and Dachan Bay ports, etc., with 38 berths that can provide shore power services. Between January and October Shenzhen Port provided power services for 339 vessels that would have otherwise used fuels, reducing pollution.

Between January and December, Shenzhen Port moved 7.4 million TEUs that were transshipped through vessels, up by 3.67 percent and 181,000 TEUs through sea-rail transportation, up by 13.47 percent year on year.

Among them, Shenzhen western port terminals handled 11.84 million TEUs, up by 3.6 percent year on year, a new record since the throughput of the port had reached over 10 million TEUs in 2019. The foreign trade throughput reached 11.11 million TEUs in 2020, up by 2.8 percent year on year, statistics from Shenzhen Customs show.

Shenzhen Port suffered significant impacts due to the COVID-19 pandemic early last year. In the first half of 2020, the container throughput decreased by 10.8 percent compared to the same period in the previous year. Since the second half of 2020 with the recovery of production and supporting policies of Shenzhen to relieve burdens of enterprises, the marine shipment business has been recovering.
