The table tennis teams from Shenzhen Xili Primary School shone at the grand final of the 2020 National Children’s Table Tennis Tournaments held in Jining City, Shandong Province by winning one gold, three bronzes and a fifth place and with six young players meeting the threshold of national-level athletes.

Yang Zehui, who is also a member of the children’s national table tennis team, outperformed her elder counterparts from the teenager’s team and secured a bronze at the girl’s singles game. She also won another bronze in the mixed doubles game with her teammate Dai Jingpeng, and the fifth place in the girls’ team game with her teammates Wang Yitong, Huang Huiyan and Guo Jiahui.

Yang and Dai are now eligible to apply for recognition as first class national-level athletes.

Cui Zijun, a newly appointed member of the young national team from the school, in spite of his illness won the champion prize in the boy’s singles competition attended by children aged between 8 and 10.

Xili Primary School has joined hands with Shenzhen Sports School to cultivate young athletes and last year won a prize for its achievement in the integration of sports and school education.

The National Children’s Table Tennis Tournaments is a serial sporting event consisting of eight parts. The grand finale was held after the selection of the children’s and teenager’s national team and thus showcased some of the most prolific young players playing at a national level. (Wang Haolan)
