Outward reform to continue in US
    2021-01-22  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Kobayashi Setsurin

Japan, Senior executive

The year 2020 is really a year full of spectacular and dramatic changes. The U.S. election is definitely one of the most dramatic changes as it has created many unprecedented things. However, these are all phenomena, serving as a mirror to reflect deep problems in society.

Chinese people often say comparison lets us see differences. This is true with individuals as well as with our society. Some are rich. Some are poor.

People hold different values. We see differences everywhere and they are getting bigger. To some degree, differences are an internal driving force of the capitalist market economy. So the public divided with opposite views.

The United States of America needs reforms, which in fact began at the end of the Cold War. The Democratic Party conducted reforms but showed less effects. The Republican Party also conducted reforms but instead caused confrontation. If there is one thing the two parties have in common, it is that they are “all outward.” The tendency to “take from outside,” based on their common cultural DNA, which is power game strategy, will continue during Biden’s administration, just in a slightly different way, specifically in a “clever way” or a “forceful way.”

As an old Chinese saying goes: “People do not really suffer from being poor, but from inequality,” it is estimated that this problem is going to be an irreconcilable contradiction that American society will face for a long time. Moreover, their cultural DNA makes it difficult for them to reform “inward” as China has done. Their focus and their “wisdom” will always be “outward.”
