‘Armed Reaction 5’ earns low score
    2021-02-05  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE fifth season of the popular Hong Kong TV series “Armed Reaction” premiered Jan. 25 to high anticipation, but the latest installment of one of TVB’s most popular police dramas of all time only got a 5.9 out of 10 score on the Chinese reviewing website Douban.

The Chinese title of “Armed Reaction” literally means “policewoman who carry guns.” The first season was a ground-breaking success when it premiered in 1998. The drama closely followed the lives of two policewomen portrayed by Esther Kwan and Joyce Tang. The series is a mixture of mystery, family, romance, as well as social commentary on the struggles that both of the two policewomen had to endure as women in the male-dominated police force. The drama is blessed with feminine positivity, and it sent a very important message to Hong Kong women of the late 1990s. The drama series went on for three more seasons, with the fourth season airing in 2004.

Similar to some Western dramas, the fifth season has two main storylines which are expected to converge at a later point in time. On the one line, it follows policewoman Diana, played by Jessica Hsuan, and her relationship with her despicable colleague, played by Moses Chan. The two are part of a team that solves cold cases. On the other, the story centers on a member of a triad played by Him Law. The storylines are easy to follow and the motives of each character are clear but the Hong Kong press commented that the fifth season has repackaged itself into a comedic soap opera.(SD-Agencies)
