A: What’s up? You look upset. B: It really hit me for six to find that my father had written about me in his book. Note: This idiom here means “(often of something unpleasant) to surprise somebody a lot.” It can also mean “to deal a severe blow, emotional or physical, or to sweep aside one’s arguments or schemes.” The expression derives from the game of cricket. To those unfamiliar with the rules, six runs are scored when the ball is hit over the boundary without first touching the ground. So, a bowler is said to be “hit for six” when the batsman hits a ball into the crowd. We can also say “to be knocked for six.” The usage is chiefly British. |
