Free weekend shows at concert hall
    2021-03-04  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

With the coming of spring, two public-benefit series under the titles of Beautiful Sunday and Afternoon Music Time return to Shenzhen Concert Hall on weekend afternoons.

On March 7, seven young musicians, including three violinists, two violists, a cellist and a pianist, will present a program specifically selected for the upcoming Women’s Day. Audiences will hear such familiar pieces as the Chinese song “Fishing Girls by the Sea,” “Por una Cabeza,” “Liebesleid” (“Love’s Sorrow”) and Sarasate’s “Andalusia Romance,” one of his beloved “Spanish Dances.”

On March 14, two sopranos, a tenor and a baritone, together with their colleagues at Fujian Normal University who teach the piano, violin, cello and pipa (the short-necked Chinese lute) will perform a program that includes the most popular pieces from classical music and Chinese music. Professor Huang Zongquan from Shanghai Conservatory of Music will lecture the audience on the background of the pieces and help them better appreciate the show.

On March 28, erhu (two-stringed Chinese fiddle) player Yang Xue and yangqin (Chinese struck zither) player Liu Yinxuan, both teachers from Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, will perform familiar Chinese songs and folk music pieces. The program includes “Moon Reflected on the Huishan Spring,” “Why Are the Flowers So Red?” and “War Horses Racing.”

On March 28, the HWS Piano Trio, comprising of pianist Huang Xiang, violinist Wen Huiming and cellist Alexander Suleiman, will perform a program they call “the four seasons of classical music,” bringing the masterpieces of various eras that include the works of Hayden, Beethoven, Piazzolla and others.

The Afternoon Music Time series will return to the chamber hall March 20, when Wang Lulu of Shenzhen University will perform an accordion concert with her students. On March 27, singer/songwriter Yi Chen will perform a pop music concert, featuring a dozen of original pieces.
