A biology laboratory was recently put into operation on the campus of the Yucai Education Group in Shekou, Nanshan District after two years of design and construction. Following the future trends of biological research, the lab, co-initiated by Yucai and BGI, a genome research organization, aims to cultivate students’ ability to think about and to explore biology. The project was implemented by Bluepha, a synthetic biology and biomaterials company. Geng Qiang, vice president of Bluepha, said the lab is a top-level biology lab for any high school, in which all basic experiments in genome engineering can be carried out. The lab can fully provide for the basic needs of biological experiments. The interior décor of the lab is futuristic, with a giant DNA model installed at its entrance. The curtains also feature prints of genome engineering. The lab is equipped with VR equipment to help students learn in a fun environment. Two elective courses that started in the spring semester have been taught in the lab, namely “fun genome examinations” and “future genome engineers.” Liu Xingyun, a senior grade one student, said he had much fun in the new course. “This course is mind-blowing and I am looking forward to doing experiments in the lab,” he said. Liu’s classmate Li Yixuan said she was excited about this learning experience. “Exploring the unknown realm of gene engineering is challenging and satisfying. The well-equipped lab and the experienced teachers led us immediately into the world of biology. I cannot wait to do experiments in future sessions.” (Debra Li) |
